While many of us spend spring planning our summer vacations, dozens of College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences students are set to embark on the adventure of the lifetime — traveling to Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe to learn about agriculture and the environment.

In agricultural circles, it seems few topics can ruffle more feathers or start more shouting matches than talk of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or animal rights. These are just the types of discussion topics Professor Dennis Duncan, in the Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communication (ALEC), encourages in his Global Seminar in Agricultural Leadership course each spring.

Travel Funds
Three CAES faculty members have been awarded funding from the first-round of the newly launched Office of Global Programs Faculty International Travel Funding Program. However, a second round is already under way; the deadline for applying is April 1.

Graduate Student Studies Overseas
Studying overseas was an eye-opening experience for University of Georgia graduate student Camden Lowrance. Six months in Greece allowed Lowrance to work on his master’s thesis and to prove that he could more than survive — he could excel at his work — in a foreign country.

Mini Summit
A group of scientists from China, Taiwan and Japan traveled to south Georgia this week to share their work with University of Georgia researchers during the Seventh Annual Mini Summit on Food, Policy and the Environment. Cultural differences and thousands of miles separate the group, but they are unified in their primary concern — the safety of the world’s food supply.

Asian Agricultural Sciences Summit
From tilapia to canned Mandarin oranges, Americans import many staple grocery products from Asian nations like China, Taiwan and Japan. Likewise, these countries import Georgia-grown products—chicken, cotton and pecans.

Georgia Peanut Tour
The annual Georgia Peanut Tour, held Sept. 16 to Sept. 18 in southeast Georgia, is a major attraction for the nation’s peanut industry, and attracts a number of international visitors.
