Daniel Warnell Lee didn’t complain about the severe wounds he suffered in battle during World War II. He also didn’t boast about receiving the nation’s highest military distinction — commonly called the Congressional Medal of Honor — for his acts of valor during that battle. His medal was not prominently displayed at home, said his daughter, Beth Lee von Mersveldt.

Ahead of the University of Georgia and Auburn University going head-to-head on the football field on Saturday, the universities are competing off the field to raise money for their students during Beat Week from Oct. 3 through 8. This year, the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences will concentrate efforts on the college’s student emergency fund.

The University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences will welcome students for the fall semester at the annual Ag Dawg Kickoff at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, at the UGA Livestock Instructional Arena. In addition to free t-shirts and dinner options, there will be music from the Georgia Redcoat Marching Band and an appearance by Hairy Dawg.

Among the young alumni finding creative solutions to world problems, leading businesses and serving their communities are four honorees from CAES: a lawyer, a veterinarian, an industry representative and a medical resident.
