Redcoats, Hairy Dawg to help celebrate CAES' Ag Dawg Kickoff

The University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) will welcome students for the fall semester at the annual Ag Dawg Kickoff at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, at the UGA Livestock Instructional Arena. 

In addition to free t-shirts and dinner options from a variety of food trucks, there will be music from the Georgia Redcoat Marching Band and an appearance by Hairy Dawg.

The kickoff also offers a platform for students to get acquainted with peers, faculty and staff, as well as the many opportunities and resources available through CAES. An array of student groups and programs within CAES will have details available about their organizations and how to get involved for those interested. 

The kickoff is hosted by the UGA CAES Alumni Association and is funded by a combination of generous alumni gifts and various event sponsors.

“Our alumni look forward to helping make Ag Dawg Kickoff possible each year,” said Suzanne Griffeth, director of alumni engagement at CAES. “It’s a time when the alumni board and other volunteers are able to welcome returning students and make new students feel like part of our college family.”

This event is supported by fundraisers like the Give a Tee + Get a Tee campaign, which raised more than $5,500 this year through the sale of t-shirts to 195 alumni and friends to sponsor a student for the kickoff.

Along with alumni support, sponsors for the event include Corteva Agriscience, Huvepharma, Yanmar, AgGeorgia Farm Credit, AgSouth Farm Credit, Georgia Grinders and Georgia Metals.

Free t-shirts for CAES students will also be available at the Tifton and Griffin campuses, and additional details about distribution are forthcoming.

Attendance at Ag Dawg Kickoff is limited to CAES students, faculty and staff. To learn more about upcoming CAES alumni events, visit caes.uga.edu/alumni.

As another academic year draws to a close, the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences is gearing up for its Athens campus convocation ceremony, which will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, at The Classic Center in Athens. “Each year, it’s an honor to celebrate the success of our CAES graduates,” said CAES Dean and Director Nick T. Place. “It’s amazing what these students accomplish during their time with us, and I’m always excited to commemorate this next step in their lives as they continue on to either further studies or the start of their careers.”
2024 honorees are William D. Branch, Georgia Seed Development Professor in Peanut Breeding and Genetics in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, and Elzie Argene Claxton, an agriculture educator and 1980 CAES agricultural education graduate who went on to earn a master’s degree in 1982 and education specialist degree in 1984 from UGA’s College of Education. Seven alumni from the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences will be recognized at the 68th annual CAES Alumni Association Awards banquet on April 6. Two Georgia agricultural leaders will be inducted into the Georgia Agricultural Hall of Fame at the event, hosted at the Classic Center in Athens. “Georgia’s No. 1 industry — agriculture — is that because of the people that are part of the industry,” said Becca Turner, CAES Alumni Association board president.

When Phyllicia Thomas walked across the stage to accept her degree in environmental law in December 2023, it was the culmination of two journeys — one toward a dream set upon as a high school student and the other an unforeseen detour she navigated with determination and the steadfast support of her family. Thomas embarked on the second journey just over a year after graduating from the University of Georgia’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences with a bachelor’s degree in environmental economics and management in May 2019.

Among them are U.S. representatives, renowned environmental scientists, governors, leaders of national corporations, and a host of successful agricultural producers, among leaders in many other professions. Despite the differences in their college experiences and career trajectories, for many of these alumni, there is one unifying individual in their memories of CAES: Josef Broder.
