For Dean Kopsell, newly appointed associate dean for academic affairs for the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, moving to Athens is like coming home. Currently professor and chair of the Environmental Horticulture Department at the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, Kopsell, a two-time UGA alumnus and devoted Georgia Bulldog fan, is eager to return to the Classic City and excited about the opportunity to serve his alma mater and the students of CAES.

Consider your favorite breakfast cereal, granola bar or other similar food, then imagine the production facility where it is made. If you picture large machines, conveyor belts and lots of moving parts, you get the gist of the environment. Keeping all these moving parts clean is of utmost concern to manufacturers, who spend considerable time and investment on food safety, making sure their production lines are free from harmful pathogens that may make consumers sick.
“Currently, the goal is to set the foundation for innovative jellyfish research in the United States,” said UGA food science and technology doctoral candidate Peter Chiarelli. CAES News
Cannonball Fellowship 08/30/23 Lillian Dickens
Peter G. Chiarelli has been awarded an Agriculture and Food Research Initiative predoctoral fellowship from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture for his research on Georgia-caught cannonball jellyfish. Chiarelli is spearheading efforts to create a domestic market for collagen peptide powders derived from cannonball jellyfish.

International Turfgrass Support 07/18/23 Emily Cabrera
The University of Georgia’s turf program is supported by a group of faculty and research scientists throughout the state dedicated to year-round turfgrass research and outreach efforts. Members of the UGA Turf Team were recently invited to develop a training and certification program to support the field managers of Mexico’s premier soccer leagues — Liga MX, the top professional men’s soccer division, and Liga MX Femenil, the country’s top women’s soccer division.

Top Ranking 06/30/23 Rod Guajardo
The University of Georgia was recently recognized as one of the best colleges in the country through a top ranking from “Money” magazine in its annual Best Colleges in America list. Last year, the university’s four-year completion rate increased to a record 75.1% while the six-year completion rate grew to 88.1%. With a retention rate of 94.3%, UGA’s success exceeds the average completion and retention rates of peer institutions.

Microbiology Fellow 06/07/23 Jennifer L Reynolds
Francisco Diez-Gonzalez, director of the University of Georgia Center for Food Safety, has been elected as a fellow into the prestigious American Academy of Microbiology. Diez-Gonzalez was one of 65 new fellows admitted in the Class of 2023 out of a nomination pool of 148.

The University of Georgia Griffin campus held its Spring Graduation Celebration and Brick Ceremony for 21 members of the Class of 2023 on May 10, representing four of the colleges that offer degrees at UGA-Griffin. Srijana Thapa Magar, who earned a doctorate in horticulture from the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, was selected by faculty as the student speaker for the event.
