David Linvill retired from his job as a University of Georgia Extension agent, but he hasn’t stopped educating the public. Now, he focuses all of his resources on one topic — honeybees and their significance to the state’s crops.
Using a partial research grant from Georgia DOT, University of Georgia weed scientist Patrick McCullough has designed a mobile app using DOT terminology to make the tool user-friendly for workers. “All the information they need to make the best management decisions for controlling roadside weeds and vegetation is now literally at their fingertips,” he said. April 2015 was much warmer and wetter statewide than is usual for the month. The wet conditions caused delays in planting and contributed to some crop disease pressure, while the warm conditions accelerated the growth of plants, like corn, that were already in the ground. While statewide statistics will not be available until later this month, this April is expected to be one of the warmest Aprils on record for Georgia, coming close to the record of 67.9 degrees Fahrenheit set in 2002.

The University of Georgia’s newest entomologist is eyeing a different approach to studying insects in multiple agricultural crops. Instead of focusing on how to eliminate pests that reduce yield and negatively impact profits, UGA entomologist Jason Schmidt is looking to improve agricultural management systems to preserve helpful insects.

Peanut Planting
Unusually warm weather conditions and high soil temperatures have Georgia farmers itching to plant peanuts, but University of Georgia peanut agronomist Scott Monfort cautions peanut producers to hold off until the end of April or beginning of May.

Farmers who complete the survey will help University of Georgia peanut specialists understand what research and Extension work needs to be done and help them map patterns in pest activity across the state.
