Almost 400 graduate and undergraduate students participate in CAES graduation

Nearly 400 undergraduate and graduate students participated in University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences spring commencement on Thursday, May 12, at the Classic Center in Athens, Georgia.

A total 223 students are eligible for undergraduate degrees this year and 155 are eligible for master’s and doctoral degrees in disciplines ranging from animal science to environmental economics and management.

“I’m impressed with the high caliber of students in the Class of 2016, who are completing their degrees on all three of our campuses in Athens, Griffin and Tifton,” said Sam Pardue, dean and director of CAES. “We look forward to seeing the contributions they will make to solving the grand challenges before us of feeding the world, protecting the environment and growing Georgia’s economy.”

While many CAES students come from agricultural backgrounds, many more were drawn to the agricultural and environmental sciences because agriculture-related degrees prepare them to help feed a growing world and to secure meaningful jobs.

Nationally, there are about 57,900 agriculture-related jobs that come open each year and only about 35,400 graduates to fill them, according to a study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture.

Currently more than 1,500 undergraduates and more than 450 graduate students study at CAES.

Founded in 1859, CAES at UGA is the state's home for cutting-edge research, student-focused instruction and UGA Cooperative Extension public service and outreach programs. On three campuses across Georgia – in Athens, Griffin and Tifton – the college offers courses of study in 22 majors, 17 minors and 30 graduate programs that cover the breadth of agricultural, environmental and food science disciplines. In each field, students are able to work directly with world-class researchers who are finding answers to tomorrow's food supply and environmental questions.
