Georgia 4-H, Tractor Supply Company partner to raise funds, support 4-H programs

Tractor Supply Company and Georgia 4-H have partnered to send kids to Georgia 4-H summer camps, and other 4-H competitions, through the annual Spring Paper Clover Campaign.

Through the Paper Clover Campaign, customers donate $1 or more at checkout to support the endeavors of 4-H’ers across Georgia and the nation. Donations can be made in stores, online at www.tractorsupply.com and over the phone by calling Tractor Supply Company’s customer service number, 877-718-6750.

Each spring and fall, Georgia 4-H and Tractor Supply Company hold in-store fundraisers at Tractor Supply Company locations statewide. This year’s campaign runs from Wednesday, April 11, to Sunday, April 22.

Tractor Supply Company helps Georgia 4-H raise over $40,000 annually for programs that benefit 4-H’ers and communities around the state. This year’s donations will help send 4-H’ers to Georgia 4-H camps and provide them with opportunities to take part in other character- and leadership-building experiences.

During the campaign, Georgia 4-H clubs will be at Tractor Supply Company locations around the state to greet customers as they arrive at the store.

Leadership came to life for the largest-ever Georgia 4-H Day at the Capitol delegation in Atlanta as 4-H’ers engaged with the civic process. Elected officials joined nearly 800 youth, staff, volunteers and supporters on Feb. 25 to celebrate the impact of 4-H in Georgia. State Sen. Larry Walker and Georgia Rep. Rick Jasperse served as legislative hosts for the 4-H delegation. County 4-H groups explored and toured the Capitol building, and many 4-H leaders arranged direct meetings with senators and representatives from their districts. Georgia’s current slate of elected officials includes many 4-H alumni, parents and supporters who welcomed students to the place where government comes to life.

Ben Hill County 4-H captured a first place win in the National Consumer Decision Making division at the Family and Consumer Science National Championship and Conference on Jan. 17 in San Antonio, Texas. The winning team members included Thomas Holt, Nandini Patel, Landon Sinyard and Ruby Witt, with support from coach Laura Lee Hughes, University of Georgia Cooperative Extension 4-H agent and county coordinator for Ben Hill County.

Third-year University of Georgia student and Banks County 4-H alum Georgia Simmons has been in the center of the political action this fall with the Georgia 4-H Washington DC Intern Program. Simmons, an environmental resource science major in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, works in the office of U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock. As an intern on his staff, she interacts directly with policy experts and lawmakers, participating in the legislative process while earning a semester of credit hours.

On a sunny day with bright-blue skies, I arrive at Mark’s Melon Patch in Sasser, Georgia, and immediately spot the familiar white University of Georgia Cooperative Extension pickup truck, the Terrell County Extension logo prominently displayed on the door. Seth McAllister, the Agriculture and Natural Resources agent for Terrell County, greets me with a broad grin and a firm handshake. Terrell County alone has 60,000 acres of row crops, half in cotton. But what McAllister loves most about his role as an Extension agent is the diversity of his work.

By the end of his first week at 4-H summer camp, fifth grader Cooper Hardy already had many memories of new and exciting experiences. “That was the first time I got in a canoe,” Hardy said. “It was a big deal for me.” Now, 10 years later, Hardy serves as a Georgia 4-H camp counselor at Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Eatonton, Georgia. It’s a dream he’s held since the first time he set foot on the sprawling, wooded 1,500-acre campus as a camper.
