Virtual Beekeeping Institute will offer educational resources for apiarists

Professional and amateur beekeepers alike are invited to register for the 29th Young Harris College/University of Georgia Beekeeping Institute to be held virtually on May 13 and 14.

Registration, available through Wednesday, is $40 and covers two days of presentations from prominent beekeeping educators and scientists for both experienced beekeepers and beginning apiarists.

Each day the conference with feature plenary lectures from a panel of experts on current topics important in apiculture. This year’s featured plenary speakers include Professor Robin Crewe, a senior research fellow at the University of Pretoria and an expert on honey bee chemical communications systems; Kirsten Traynor, director of the Institute of Bee Research Celle in Germany and author of “Two Million Blossoms: Discovering the Medicinal Benefits of Honey”; and bee scientist Jerry Hayes, editor of Bee Culture magazine.

Educational breakout lectures will cover topics from hive types and Varroa mite management strategies to bee nutrition and queen rearing. After the institute, all presentations will be available for viewing through May 28 for registered participants. 

Due to the virtual format, the Georgia Master Beekeeper program will not be offered. Information about certified testing at local beekeeping clubs and associations is available at GAbeekeeping.com. The UGA Bee Lab will offer both the Journeyman and Master level testing at the Georgia Beekeepers Association 2021 Fall Conference to be held September 23-25. Details will be posted closer to the meeting date on the UGA Honey Bee Program website.
