Deer Fence Workshops Set at UGA Stations

Whitetail deer are beautiful creatures. But what they do to gardens and farm fields isn't pretty at all. To help prevent the damage they can do, University of Georgia experts have planned a pair of programs on building deer fences in June.

The deer-fence seminar and workshop for south Georgia will be June 15 at the UGA Attapulgus Research Farm a mile north of Attapulgus, Ga., on Highway 27.

The other program will be June 22 at the UGA Georgia Mountain Experiment Station 3 miles south of Blairsville, Ga., on Highway 129.

Participants will get a set of plans for building deer fences. And they can get hands-on experience as UGA and industry experts erect fencing at the UGA stations.

Each program will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 3:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided, and registration is free.

If you'd like to attend, please call Kay Dunn at (912) 386-3410 so planners can know how much lunch to prepare. If you'd like to work with the fencing, bring a shovel, hammer and gloves.

CAES welcomes 2024 cohort of Rural Scholars 11/20/24 Maria M. Lameiras
The University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences welcomed its fourth cohort of students chosen for the CAES Rural Scholars Program this fall just weeks after celebrating the program's first graduation. Georgia Orman, one of four inaugural Rural Scholars in CAES, graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural education. The new scholars for 2024, all from Georgia, are Ela Ash of Ocilla, Lauren E. Coley of Cochran, Amelia Housley of Canon, and London O’Steen of Ambrose.

Recent research from the University of Georgia suggests the unique stresses from farm life may be taking a toll on one of the pillars of the families that make your dinners possible: the women who keep farming families running. “If we don’t control our food sources, we don’t control our health and safety,” said Anna Scheyett, lead author of the study and a professor in UGA’s School of Social Work. “It’s a matter of national security that farmers survive in the United States.
