By Clint Thompson

Gale Buchanan, former dean and director of the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES), answers agriculture research questions and more in his three books, “Branch Research Stations in Agriculture: History, Development, Operation and Future;” “Feeding the World: Agricultural Research in the Twenty-First Century;” and “Leadership in Agriculture: Case Studies for a New Generation.”

Buchanan will be selling and signing his books during a special event on Tuesday, July 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the National Environmentally Sound Production Agriculture Laboratory (NESPAL) building on the UGA Tifton campus in Tifton, Georgia.

Buchanan’s three books will be available for purchase for the following prices: “Branch Research Stations in Agriculture: History, Development, Operation and Future,” is $25 for hardback and $20 for paperback; “Feeding the World: Agricultural Research in the Twenty-First Century” is $20 for hardback and paperback; and “Leadership in Agriculture: Case Studies for a New Generation” is $15 for hardback and paperback.

Buchanan, who was inducted into the Georgia Agricultural Hall of Fame in 2012, served as CAES dean from 1995 until 2005. He also served as the U.S. Department of Agriculture as chief scientist and undersecretary for research, education and economics.

Agriculture has been an integral part of Buchanan’s life since childhood, when he hoed weeds on his family’s peanut farm in Madison County, Florida. He left the farm to earn an undergraduate degree in agronomy from the University of Florida and then traveled to corn country to earn a doctoral degree in plant physiology from Iowa State University. His research has focused on reduction of weed pressure in agronomic crops.

Clint Thompson is an agriculture writer based in Tifton, Georgia.
