Young chefs can sharpen their cooking skills at Fulton Fresh Cooking Competition

By Christina Conner

Does your child ever watch cooking competition shows like “Chopped Junior” or Iron Chef America” and say, “I could do that!”?

Fulton Fresh is offering children that chance this spring with their second annual spring Fulton Fresh Cooking Competition on Wednesday, May 30.

Coordinated by University of Georgia Cooperative Extension in Fulton County, Fulton Fresh will host this year’s competition at the East Point Farmers Market. Extension agents will educate children about local produce, nutrition and cooking while letting them show off their creativity and culinary skills.

The competition is open to fourth- through sixth-graders who will be challenged to put their creative spin on a commonly consumed dish using in-season ingredients from the market. At the beginning of the competition, the kids will participate in a food safety class that will cover proper knife skills, food handling and an overview of the MyPlate nutrition guide.

The participants will break into teams of four to prepare their dishes, plan a presentation, and clean up within 60 minutes. Then, their creations will be judged by local farmers and celebrity chefs. Prizes will be awarded to the top winners, but every child who participates will receive a Fulton Fresh T-shirt and certificate.

The competition gives kids a chance to learn about nutrition and cooking and show off their culinary skills. It also offers an opportunity to teach people what 4-H does.

“I think it’s a great way for kids who don’t have access to 4-H (in school) to be introduced to it or even learn more about the program,” said Renee Ross, who attended the competition in 2017 to support her 10-year-old nephew.

The entrance fee is $5 and the competition will be held on Wednesday, May 30, from 5-7:30 p.m. at the East Point Farmers Market, located at 2757 E. Point Street, East Point, GA 30344. Be sure to register early. There are only 16 spots available.
