SE showCAES set for Oct. 4

Recruitment for the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences is the focus of the Southeast (SE) showCAES event on Tuesday, Oct. 4, at the Bulloch Center for Agriculture in Statesboro, Georgia. The event will kick off at 5:30 p.m.

Breanna Coursey, admissions counselor at the UGA Tifton Campus, endorses showCAES as a great way for prospective students and parents to learn about admission to UGA, and more specifically, the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

“The goal of this event is to allow students to learn more about the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the University of Georgia. CAES has 22 different undergraduate majors,” Coursey said. “We will also have a presentation from UGA admissions, so if students are interested in UGA as a whole and in learning more about the admission process, then they can come and ask questions.”

Coursey said that SE showCAES allows students closer to Tifton, Georgia, the chance to explore UGA Tifton as an option.

“If students who live in the eastern part of the state are interested in UGA Tifton, this event is beneficial for them because they do not have to drive very far,” Coursey said. “Also, students in the southeast part of the state may have never heard of UGA Tifton, and this event will allow them to see what we have to offer as well.”

Coursey said many students don’t know that they can attend UGA Tifton and receive the same degree a student might receive on the UGA Athens Campus. Many more students don’t know all that UGA Tifton has to offer. Events like SE showCAES can shed light on educational opportunities.

“It’s kind of like a career fair because a lot of students don’t realize the opportunities that are available at the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences,” Coursey said. “SE showCAES is designed for students to explore opportunities and learn more about the University of Georgia. Many students have a narrow perception of agriculture and believe that, unless they are interested in farming, agriculture is not a viable option. Agriculture is the largest industry in the state and our college encompasses everything from business to medicine. If a student is interested in job security, CAES would be a great fit.”

Parents of students are also encouraged to come. There will be parts of the event geared specifically toward parents, including discussion on financial aid.

“We have someone from the financial aid office who gives a presentation,” Coursey said. “A lot of parents and students have questions about that, so it’s really helpful for prospective students to get some insight into making their college decisions.”

High school students and college students looking to transfer to UGA are the event’s focus. Coursey said there will be breakout sessions for both.

Faculty and staff from all departments of CAES will have information booths set up to provide students with information specific to each department. Current students will also be in attendance to provide their perspective to prospective students and parents.

The event is free, but there will be a meal served, so participants are asked to preregister at https://ugeorgia.qualtrics.com.

As Georgia’s No. 1 industry, agriculture pumps billions of dollars into the state’s economy each year. While headlines often highlight Georgia’s commodities — peanuts, blueberries, poultry and more — one aspect of agriculture is often not discussed, the farmers themselves. At the 2024 Farm Stress Summit, held at the Chattahoochee Technical College Jasper campus, a few critical points were woven throughout each of the day’s sessions: The people are the most important part of Georgia’s agricultural industry, and the state needs to come together to help farmers and promote agricultural education and awareness.

Two recently published studies by University of Georgia researchers show that the consumers surveyed believe buying local is a more sustainable option, but they also value the convenience of online shopping and prefer that retailers provide basic information about the environmental impact of local products in the digital marketplace. Newest round of Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grants awarded 03/05/24 Olivia Randall
Ten university-wide projects devoted to advancing interdisciplinary research across multiple application areas have been awarded Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grants as part of the 2023 cohort. The Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grant Program was launched in 2017 and offered again in 2019 and 2021 through a partnership between the offices of Research and Public Service and Outreach. These 10 awards were chosen from 70 proposals and reflect a commitment of $1 million from UGA President Jere W. Morehead.
