August 7-13 is National Farmers Market Week

Fresh tomatoes, fresh okra and heirloom field peas — who doesn’t love a farmers market?

Well, it’s time to celebrate the local farmers and organizers who help bring local produce to downtowns and parks across Georgia each summer. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has designated August 7-13 National Farmers Market Week.

Did you know that direct to consumer sales of fruits and vegetables — like the sales at farmers markets — result in a $14.4 million impact on the Georgia economy, according to a study by the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development.

Startups in the agricultural technology sector face significant barriers on the path to establishment, including access to training and capital. These barriers are heightened for underrepresented entrepreneurs seeking to start new companies. Farm Boot Camp trains military veterans to start farms 06/12/24 Emily Cabrera
An outreach program offered by the University of Georgia has received federal funding to train military veterans to start their own farms. Farm Boot Camp, a specialized training program for military veterans and their spouses, offers free monthly trainings and specialized workshops to provide essential skills and knowledge needed to start or return to farming operations.
