UGA President Morehead emphasizes importance of Georgia agriculture through Sunbelt Ag Expo visit

The Sunbelt Agricultural Expo opened its doors on Tuesday, Oct. 20, to University of Georgia President Jere Morehead, who was one of the event’s first visitors.

Part of a UGA contingent that included Jennifer Frum, UGA vice president for public service and outreach, Morehead expressed excitement about visiting the expo, which is in its 38th year.

“This visit has been outstanding. I have seen a lot, learned a lot and really enjoyed being around the people involved in the most important and largest industry in the state,” he said. “I learn a little more about the important and strong relationship between UGA and the agriculture industry each year that I participate in this great event.”

This visit to the Sunbelt Agricultural Expo was Morehead's third since assuming office in July 2013. Like the two previous years, he gained knowledge about Georgia’s No. 1 industry after visiting with southeastern U.S. agricultural leaders and faculty, students and staff from UGA’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

Morehead’s stopover at the expo is part of a larger emphasis the UGA president placed on learning about the state’s agriculture industry. Earlier this year, Morehead, along with Georgia Agricultural Commissioner Gary Black and members of the Georgia General Assembly, participated in a farm tour in north Georgia.

The Sunbelt Agricultural Expo will continue through this Thursday, Oct. 22, in Moultrie, Georgia.

Danny Kornegay, who has farmed for 45 years in North Carolina, was named the Swisher Sweets/Sunbelt Expo Southeastern Farmer of the Year at Tuesday’s Luncheon.

Newest round of Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grants awarded 03/05/24 Olivia Randall
Ten university-wide projects devoted to advancing interdisciplinary research across multiple application areas have been awarded Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grants as part of the 2023 cohort. The Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grant Program was launched in 2017 and offered again in 2019 and 2021 through a partnership between the offices of Research and Public Service and Outreach. These 10 awards were chosen from 70 proposals and reflect a commitment of $1 million from UGA President Jere W. Morehead.

From beetles to butterflies, pollinators are a beautiful and integral part of nature. However, these tiny creatures may be more economically important to agricultural and ecological systems than previously thought. In a recent project by the Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development at the University of Georgia, economist Sharon Kane and plant protection expert Becky Griffin have put together a powerful map displaying the economic importance of pollinators across Georgia.

UGA Extension announces 2024 Georgia Farmer of the Year 01/26/24 Maria M. Lameiras
Building on the foundation set by his father in Effingham County, Shiloh Farms owner Bruce Redmond has expanded his operation through innovation and dedication, earning him the honor of 2024 Georgia Farmer of the Year, presented at the 2024 Georgia Ag Forecast in Tifton, Georgia, on Jan. 26. Nominated by Blake Carter, the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources agent for Effingham County, Redmond assumed full ownership and operation of Shiloh Farms in 2018.
