Annual horse owner's seminar set at UGA

Horse owners will get the latest research-based information on how to care for their animals at the University of Georgia 2014 Horse Owner’s Seminar and Trade Show set for Aug. 9 at the UGA Livestock Arena in Athens.

The one-day event will begin at 8 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. The seminar is presented annually by the UGA student chapter of the American Association of Equine Practitioners, the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine.

Topics will include pasture management and weed control, lameness diagnosis, equine dentistry, vaccinations, seasonal care and hoof lameness. Afternoon sessions include hands-on laboratories on saddle fitting and diagnosing lameness.

Speakers include veterinarians from the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine, UGA and University of Florida animal scientists, UGA plant pathologists and a UGA Extension agent. Seminar sponsors are Southern States and the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Equine. Support for the program comes from several industry sponsors who will be present at the trade show.

Adult registration is $50, students 5-17 years of age pay $25 and children five and under are free. A 10 percent discount will be given to groups of 10 or more by emailing Allison Williard at awilliar@uga.edu. Registration includes lunch, a t-shirt, registration materials and a digital copy of all seminar proceedings. Registration closes on Aug. 1.
