Southwest Georgia Beekeepers Club presents bee school

The Southwest Georgia Beekeepers Club will hold a bee school on March 29 from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Parks at Chehaw in Albany, Ga.

Formed in 2011, the SOWEGA Beekeepers Club is a growing group of bee enthusiasts from southwest Georgia. The University of Georgia Extension office in Dougherty County is sponsoring the workshop.

It will cover the art of beekeeping, hive equipment, honey production and how to manage a hive for pollination. Participants will work with live bees (if they desire) and receive a “My Hive Tool” DVD.

The $30 registration fee includes the course, take home materials, lunch and a club membership. Register online at sowegabeekeepers.org .

Backyard gardener Calvin King has been a member of the club for three years, when he first decided to order his first bees.

“I began keeping bees when I suddenly realized that after three years of maintaining a garden, I had not seen a single bee in my vegetable garden nor in my flower garden. The first summer after installing a hive in my backyard, I not only had honeybees in the gardens, but other types of bees and more butterflies as well,” he said.

King calls the honey that his bees produce an added benefit to his now healthier backyard environment.

The SOWEGA Beekeepers Club meets every second Thursday at 6:30 p.m., at the Creekside Education Center in the Parks of Chehaw, Albany, Ga.

Newest round of Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grants awarded 03/05/24 Olivia Randall
Ten university-wide projects devoted to advancing interdisciplinary research across multiple application areas have been awarded Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grants as part of the 2023 cohort. The Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grant Program was launched in 2017 and offered again in 2019 and 2021 through a partnership between the offices of Research and Public Service and Outreach. These 10 awards were chosen from 70 proposals and reflect a commitment of $1 million from UGA President Jere W. Morehead.

From beetles to butterflies, pollinators are a beautiful and integral part of nature. However, these tiny creatures may be more economically important to agricultural and ecological systems than previously thought. In a recent project by the Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development at the University of Georgia, economist Sharon Kane and plant protection expert Becky Griffin have put together a powerful map displaying the economic importance of pollinators across Georgia.

A multidisciplinary team of researchers at the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences recently renewed a $4 million contract with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service to build upon their previous work to develop targeted interventions to mitigate the impact of silverleaf whiteflies on vegetable production in the Southeast. UGA entomologist Allen Moore leads the research team in collaboration with USDA ARS in Charleston, South Carolina.
