showCAES to highlight college's academic programs

The University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences will be showcased in a pair of upcoming recruitment events.

Held in southwest and southeast Georgia, the CAES recruitment events spotlight the college and its three campuses: Athens, Tifton and Griffin. High school and college students are encouraged to attend either event to learn about the college’s admission requirements, financial aid and majors.

The southeast Georgia event, showCAES@UGAsoutheast, will be held on Sept. 19 at the Toombs County Agri-Center from 5 to 7 p.m. The southwest Georgia event, showCAES@UGAsouthwest, will be held at the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center on Sept. 24 from 5 to 7 p.m.

“We hope to better educate southeast and southwest Georgia on what the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences has to offer prospective students, both freshmen and transfers,” said Meredith Rutland, admissions counselor for the UGA Tifton campus.

“There’s still a lack of awareness about the fact that there are academic programs from the University of Georgia offered right here in Tifton. I think a lot of people will be surprised to learn that students can earn a four-year, bachelor of science degree in a pre-law, pre-vet or pre-med discipline while staying in Tifton. With the addition of agribusiness and biological science [programs], that’s now a reality,” Rutland said.

Josef Broder, CAES associate dean for academic affairs, will provide attendees with an overview of the college. Among the topics to be discussed are academic program offerings, ambassador programs, study abroad programs, admissions information and financial aid.

The students will then be divided into separate groups, one designed for high school students and one designed for collegiate transfer students, to learn more about the admissions process and requirements.

To end the evening, students and parents can participate in a question-and-answer session with UGA admissions personnel, talk with UGA students and professors and learn more about the different majors offered on the three CAES campuses.

Close to 175 people attended last year’s southwest Georgia event in Tifton.

“These events are hosted in this area because we want south Georgia to know that they can be part of the Bulldog Nation, too. We have a UGA campus right here in their backyard,” Rutland said. “We also want to bring Athens to south Georgia so that these prospective students and their families can receive valuable information about UGA that they wouldn’t normally get without traveling three and half hours away.”

As Georgia’s No. 1 industry, agriculture pumps billions of dollars into the state’s economy each year. Two recently published studies by University of Georgia researchers show that the consumers surveyed believe buying local is a more sustainable option, but they also value the convenience of online shopping and prefer that retailers provide basic information about the environmental impact of local products in the digital marketplace. Newest round of Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grants awarded 03/05/24 Olivia Randall
Ten university-wide projects devoted to advancing interdisciplinary research across multiple application areas have been awarded Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grants as part of the 2023 cohort. The Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grant Program was launched in 2017 and offered again in 2019 and 2021 through a partnership between the offices of Research and Public Service and Outreach. These 10 awards were chosen from 70 proposals and reflect a commitment of $1 million from UGA President Jere W. Morehead.
