Houston County Master Gardeners Offer Garden Academy — a crash course on everything you ever wanted to know about your Central Georgia landscape

By Merritt Melancon

Are you a new homeowner, or are you just looking for more confidence when you tackle projects around your home’s landscape?

If you answered yes, chances are you’ve got some questions. Houston County Master Gardeners have designed a program that will provide you with answers.

The Master Gardener Extension Volunteers are hosting a multi-week Garden Academy to equip homeowners with the basics of landscaping and landscape care. The 14-class course runs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays, from Sept. 6 to Oct. 23.

“This series offers the homeowner practical information on a variety of topics that can be applied immediately to improve the quality of a landscape in the middle Georgia area.” said Teddie Berry, a homeowner horticulture program assistant in Houston County.

The course, which costs $120, will be led by guest instructors from University of Georgia Cooperative Extension, green industry professionals, and Master Gardeners. They will talk about landscape design, trees for urban landscapes, selecting and caring for ornamentals, adding color to the garden, using water wisely, attracting wildlife to your yard and several other topics.

Anyone interested in finding out more about the class should visit www.caes.uga.edu/extension/houston or email Berry at mg@uga.edu.
