The University of Georgia will present the annual J.W. Fanning Lecture on Jan. 20, 2012. The lecture will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Georgia Center for Continuing Education on the UGA campus in Athens, Ga.

The speaker, Elena Irwin, will present a lecture entitled, “The Implications of the Housing Bust and Other Recent Trends for Urban, Suburban and Exurban Growth.” Irwin is a professor in the department of agricultural, environment and development economics at The Ohio State University.

She specializes in regional and community economics. Her research applies theory and modeling techniques from the fields of spatial and regional economics, including the application of spatial econometrics and geographic information systems.

The Agricultural Economics Association of Georgia sponsors the annual Fanning lecture. It is named for J.W. Fanning, who made significant contributions to Georgia and to the University of Georgia during his 43-year career. He served as head of the department of agricultural economics and as UGA’s vice president for services. Fanning founded Leadership Georgia, an educational program that prepares future business and political leaders for a more active role in the affairs of Georgia.
