UGA to present Ag Forecast Jan. 23-27

Agriculture is the food you eat, clothes you wear and the fuel that runs your life. From the local Georgia farm to the globally stocked supermarket, access to safe and affordable products is important. Learn what's ahead for this vital industry at the 2012 Ag Forecast series to be held 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 23 in Macon, Jan. 24 in Tifton, Jan. 25 in Statesboro, Jan. 26 in Gainesville and Jan. 27 in Carrollton.

Producers, policymakers, agribusiness professionals and consumers will hear the 2012 economic outlook for agriculture from University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences economists. Regional speakers will discuss farm labor issues.

Participants will receive a copy of the 2012 Ag Forecast book, which gives a detailed analysis of each major agricultural product - from broilers to blueberries - produced in Georgia. The UGA CAES, Georgia Farm Bureau and the Georgia Department of Agriculture annually present the series. Registration is $30 per person or $200 for a table of eight. Wheat breeders spend years meticulously crossing varieties to coax the best traits out of each species, carefully propagating plant varieties that are healthier, heartier and better suited for the environments where they are grown. Brewmasters are equally painstaking when choosing the components that will give their beers a specific flavor profile. These two exacting professions came together this spring when Athens-based Creature Comforts Brewing Co. reached out to the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences to find a sustainable wheat variety they could use to make a good beer for a great cause.

Newest round of Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grants awarded 03/05/24 Olivia Randall
Ten university-wide projects devoted to advancing interdisciplinary research across multiple application areas have been awarded Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grants as part of the 2023 cohort. The Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grant Program was launched in 2017 and offered again in 2019 and 2021 through a partnership between the offices of Research and Public Service and Outreach. These 10 awards were chosen from 70 proposals and reflect a commitment of $1 million from UGA President Jere W. Morehead.

When Phyllicia Thomas walked across the stage to accept her degree in environmental law in December 2023, it was the culmination of two journeys — one toward a dream set upon as a high school student and the other an unforeseen detour she navigated with determination and the steadfast support of her family. Thomas embarked on the second journey just over a year after graduating from the University of Georgia’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences with a bachelor’s degree in environmental economics and management in May 2019.
