UGA to hold student recruitment event in Tifton Sept. 20

By Lauren Oliva

Southwest Georgia high school or college transfer students can learn about the many programs and opportunities the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences can offer them by attending the UGA Southwest District Recruitment Event Sept. 20 at 5:00 p.m. at the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center in Tifton, Ga.

“We kind of try to open their eyes to the opportunities that we have available,” said Laura Perry Johnson, event organizer and 4-H program development coordinator in southwest Georgia. “We have exhibits from all of the departments in our college.”

The event will include an informational session on the college, programs available, financial aid and admissions. There will also be a session for transfer students on admission requirements. Representatives and current students from CAES will be available to answer any questions that students or parents may have.

Since the event began five years ago, the number of applicants and the number of students accepted and enrolled to CAES has increased from the south Georgia counties, Johnson said.

Christy Bryan, UGA Tifton Campus academic programs recruiter, said as a graduate of CAES she wasn’t fully aware of all the opportunities the college offered during her studies.

“The reason we have the event is to promote awareness throughout the southwest district of the state and to show potential students the opportunities that they can have through the CAES that they may not know about,” she said. “We’re hoping to really enlighten students.”

Dinner will be provided. High school students in the tenth through twelfth grades can sign up by calling their local UGA Cooperative Extension office at 1-(800) ASK-UGA1 or the UGA Cooperative Extension Southwest District office at (229) 386-3414. College transfer students should call (229) 386-3528. Applicants should register by Sept. 16.
