Small farms focus of upcoming conference

“Making every acre count” is the theme of this year’s small farm conference March 31 through April 1 in Athens, Ga. The sessions, held at the Foundry Park Inn and Spa, are designed to help farmers interested in making the most of their land.

The conference will cover marketing, insurance and liability concerns, certifications in organic and naturally grown, state and federal programs and benefits, Georgia’s Farm to School program, pastureland management, safe food handling techniques, grass-fed beef and taking products to farmers markets.

Georgia Department of Agriculture commissioner Gary Black will be the keynote speaker. The conference will include small farm tours to Plow Point Farms in Monroe, which raises chickens and grass-fed beef, and Whippoorwill Hollow Farm in Walnut Grove, a certified organic farm specializing in sustainable fruit, vegetable and flower production.

To register for the 2011 Georgia Small Farm Conference, go to www.areg.caes.uga.edu. Producer scholarships will be awarded as funds are available. The deadline for scholarship application is March 24. Registration is $100 before March 24.

Participating partners for the conference include the University of Georgia, UGA Cooperative Extension, UGA Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development, Fort Valley State University, Natural Resources Conservation Service, USDA, Georgia RC&D Council, Georgia Association of Conservation District Supervisors, Farm Service Agency, Rural Development, Georgia Organics, Team Agriculture Georgia, Georgia Department of Agriculture, Oconee River Soil and Water Conservation District, Georgia Agritourism Association, Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission and the Walton County Soil and Water Conservation District.

The field of medicine is ever-changing, and the use of herbal medicines may play a bigger role in health care as the value of natural remedies gain recognition in the Western world. Students at the University of Georgia’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences are delving into the field of medicinal remedies through the class “Herbs, Spices and Medicinal Plants.” Offered to undergraduate students through the Department of Horticulture, the class helps students develop a deeper understanding of the connection between nature and health.
Peach growers are looking forward to a fruitful season as the weather this winter and spring have been near-perfect for the sensitive crop. This year is projected to be a much-needed comeback from the disastrous season they experienced after a late freeze in March 2023 took out more than 90% of the state's crop. Growers hopeful 2024 peach season will rebound from disastrous 2023 04/10/24 Emily Cabrera
Last year, the peach industry lost $60 million due to the late freeze that hit much of the Southeast in mid-March 2023, said Jeff Cook, University of Georgia Cooperative Extension agent for Peach and Taylor counties. With no freezing temperatures in the forecast and hope for strong pricing during the upcoming season, peach growers are looking forward to a much-needed rebound year.

The door to UGArden’s herb drying room leads to an olfactory explosion — sharp peppermint, earthy tulsi, sweet calendula and floral chamomile mix into an herbal perfume that would undoubtedly have tea drinkers reaching for their kettles. Now University of Georgia students will be able to get a taste of UGArden’s chamomile tea, along with a selection of the student community farm’s other herbal teas, with their campus meals as the UGArden medicinal herb program expands into UGA dining halls this spring.

Newest round of Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grants awarded 03/05/24 Olivia Randall
Ten university-wide projects devoted to advancing interdisciplinary research across multiple application areas have been awarded Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grants as part of the 2023 cohort. The Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grant Program was launched in 2017 and offered again in 2019 and 2021 through a partnership between the offices of Research and Public Service and Outreach. These 10 awards were chosen from 70 proposals and reflect a commitment of $1 million from UGA President Jere W. Morehead.

When Phyllicia Thomas walked across the stage to accept her degree in environmental law in December 2023, it was the culmination of two journeys — one toward a dream set upon as a high school student and the other an unforeseen detour she navigated with determination and the steadfast support of her family. Thomas embarked on the second journey just over a year after graduating from the University of Georgia’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences with a bachelor’s degree in environmental economics and management in May 2019.

As students filter into Julie Campbell’s Tuesday morning lab, they are greeted by bins of sharp tools lining cold, stainless steel tables. It’s dissection day, but not the kind you may expect. This is “Floral Design and Management,” or HORT 3030, and today’s lesson is the anatomy of a flower. Students pass pale pink carnations and delicate yellow-and-orange Alstroemeria around the room as Campbell, assistant professor in the University of Georgia Department of Horticulture, begins a lecture on plant morphology.
