Gardening class set for UGA Griffin campus

A series of free gardening classes offered by Spalding County Extension will be presented in February and March at the University of Georgia Research and Education Garden in Griffin, Ga.

The classes, Gardening 101, Totally Tomatoes and Turfgrass Basics, will all be led by Spalding County Extension Agent Wade Hutcheson. Each class is limited to the first 20 registrants.

Gardening 101 will cover basic requirements to get a new or old vegetable garden growing. The class will also cover traditional and organic methods and explain common terms and practices like solarization, composting, mulching, double digging and soil testing.

This class will be offered Feb. 24 from 10 a.m. until noon, Feb. 26 from 10 a.m. until noon and March 1 from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m.

The Totally Tomatoes class will cover the basics of growing the South’s favorite fruit. Participants will learn how to plant tomatoes by seed or sets. The Gardening 101 course is recommended as a prerequisite.

This class will be offered March 3 from 10 a.m. until noon, March 4 from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. and March 5 from 10 a.m. until noon.

The Turfgrass Basics class will teach participants how to make their lawns greener and less weedy.

This class will be offered March 24 from 10 a.m. until noon, March 25 from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. and March 26 from 10 a.m. until noon.

Over the past couple of weeks, I have received numerous calls from curious homeowners and frustrated farmers regarding the dreaded fall armyworm. Damage to established turf is most often aesthetic. However, newly planted sod or sprigs can be severely damaged or even killed by fall armyworm feeding.
