ATLANTA -- For 67 years, Georgia’s best 4-H’ers have gathered here once a year to champion their program during the annual State 4-H Congress. The competition this week was no exception, as 49 individuals emerged as state project competition winners.

"After many years of watching 4-H’ers compete here, I’m still amazed at the quality of the presentations, the depth of their portfolios of work and the poise they show under pressure,” said Roger C. "Bo" Ryles, state 4-H program leader with the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

The 4-H members give 12-minute demonstrations and prepare portfolios of their research and service in 49 project areas such as public speaking, history, wildlife and human development. Expert judges evaluate their work and interview them on their presentations and portfolios.

“It is a testament to the high quality and value of 4-H programming that in today’s high-tech world, a century-old program still attracts this level of participation and commitment every year,” Ryles said. “You don’t have to look far in this state or this nation to find outstanding leaders who developed those skills through 4-H.”
