Gear up for spring with “Gardening in Georgia”

Is your garden looking sad and tired after the long winter? Learn how to give your garden a spring makeover on “Gardening in Georgia with Walter Reeves” April 23 and 26.

"Gardening in Georgia" airs on Georgia Public Broadcasting stations across Georgia each Wednesday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 12:30 and 6:30 p.m. The show is hosted by retired extension agent and Georgia gardening guru Walter Reeves.

David Chambers from Callaway Gardens shows Reeves how to guard fruits and vegetables against spring cold weather. Looking for a springtime showy plant? Italian arum produces silver-veined leaves and spikes of red berries long before summertime plants show their true colors.

Drought has made gardeners water-conscious. There’s a new twist on an old idea that makes it possible to conserve and keep the garden well-watered. He shows how to easily build a water barrel.

Some plants look best in places difficult to access. He uses a drill and a vacuum cleaner to plant groundcover plants in between stepping stones.

“Gardening in Georgia” is coproduced by the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and GPB. It's underwritten by McCorkle Nurseries and the Georgia Urban Agriculture Council. To find out more about the show, visit the Web site www.gardeningingeoria.com.
