Revenge of the plant nerds

Walter Reeves is a self-described plant nerd. Join the club as he hosts “Gardening in Georgia,” Sept. 27 and 29, and shows how to bring patio plants inside, designs beautiful containers for shade and teaches viewers all about Georgia palm trees.

"Gardening in Georgia" airs on Georgia Public Broadcasting stations across Georgia each Thursday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

As temperatures finally begin to fall, it’s time to bring patio plants back inside. Reeves will give tips on how to make it a painless trip for you and your plants.

Pretty containers aren’t just for sunny spots. You can jazz up shady areas with the right pot and plants, even in the winter. Reeves visits with Melody McDanal at Atlanta’s Habersham Gardens to demonstrate unusual plants for shaded spots.

Nothing says relaxation like a cold drink under the canopy of a palm tree. Reeves and Rog Ditmer enjoy an afternoon studying palm trees at The Cloister on Sea Island.

"Gardening in Georgia" is coproduced by GPB and the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Each show is geared to Georgia soils, climate and growing conditions.

CAES welcomes 2024 cohort of Rural Scholars 11/20/24 Maria M. Lameiras
The University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences welcomed its fourth cohort of students chosen for the CAES Rural Scholars Program this fall just weeks after celebrating the program's first graduation. Georgia Orman, one of four inaugural Rural Scholars in CAES, graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural education. The new scholars for 2024, all from Georgia, are Ela Ash of Ocilla, Lauren E. Coley of Cochran, Amelia Housley of Canon, and London O’Steen of Ambrose.

Recent research from the University of Georgia suggests the unique stresses from farm life may be taking a toll on one of the pillars of the families that make your dinners possible: the women who keep farming families running. “If we don’t control our food sources, we don’t control our health and safety,” said Anna Scheyett, lead author of the study and a professor in UGA’s School of Social Work. “It’s a matter of national security that farmers survive in the United States. And one of the big factors in helping farms survive is women.”
