That new plant will look great in your landscape. You have the perfect spot for it. But think a minute before you plant it. Do you know you can keep it there?

Nearly all of the invasive plants that plague people now, from Chinese privet to kudzu to Chinese wisteria, were deliberately planted in someone's landscape. Only when it was too late did people realize they couldn't contain their exotic plants.

To help prevent even more invasive plant species, the Georgia Exotic Pest Plant Council and Georgia Southern Botanical Garden will provide the Coastal Plain Invasive Plant Control Workshop Sept. 28 in Statesboro, Ga.

You'll learn how to recognize the major invasive plants, including new threats, in the Georgia coastal plain. In both classroom studies and field exercises, expert instructors will show cost-effective ways to control these plants. They'll identify alternative plants to use instead of invasive ones, too.

The workshop will be at the Wildlife Center on the Georgia Southern University campus. It will begin at 8 a.m. and end with a 4 p.m. session.

The fee is $40 for GA-EPPC or GSBG members and $50 for nonmembers if you sign up by Sept. 20. It's $60 after that. The fee covers a notebook of resources, lunch and snacks.
