Host Walter Reeves gives the basics of planting annual flowers and summer vegetables on "Gardening in Georgia" May 21 on Georgia Public Broadcasting."Gardening in Georgia" is produced by GPB and the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. It airs twice each Saturday, at 12:30 and 7 p.m.
On the May 21 program, Reeves shows how to protect annual flowers' delicate roots to get them off to a good start. He shows how to plant annuals through a layer of newspaper, too. But he cautions you not to use the comic pages. "Your plants will grow funny if you do!" he says.

Reeves gives some tips on planting tomatoes, squash, beans and peppers, too. He shows how to plant tomatoes deeply to encourage good rooting. And he uses wheat straw mulch to fight weeds, save water and invite beneficial insects to his garden.
Finally, he visits with UGA horticulture professor emeritus Wayne McLaurin, discussing how to select and grow cantaloupes in your summer garden.
