UGA training set for Hispanic child care providers

University of Georgia

The Georgia Traffic Injury Prevention Institute will conduct the first statewide accredited training in child passenger safety for Spanish-speaking child care providers June 3 in Atlanta.

The training will be at 7 p.m. at the International Village Sheltering Arms.

Almost 48,000 Georgia children under 6 years old are Hispanic. Many are cared for regularly by licensed child care facilities. Providers have to get at least 10 hours of training each year.

The training will address Georgia law, crash dynamics, types of safety seats, gross misuse, liability issues and local resources.

"The Hispanic community in Georgia needs traffic safety education and information to protect themselves and their children," said Steve Davis, GTIPI director. "We're targeting the metro area first. We will then reach out to other areas."

The GTIPI is a part of the University of Georgia Extension Service. It has addressed the state's child passenger safety issues for 18 years.
