Review, Clinic, Course Offered in March

People interested in landscaping, ornamentals, turf and orchids will be able to learn a great deal in educational programs offered during March.

Two trainings near Atlanta and a short course on the University of Florida campus will offer the latest updates. And the first two will include pesticide recertification credits.

Pesticide License Review, Exam

The Georgia Center for Urban Agriculture will have a commercial pesticide license training and exam in category 24 (ornamentals and turf) at the State Farmers Market in Forest Park, Ga. March 15.

A commercial license is required when any pesticide, including herbicides, is applied for pay. This training will review the general standards and category 24 portions of the pesticide license exam.

Participants can take the exam itself at the end of the review sessions. Review study manuals (available through the University of Georgia and some landscape supply dealers) before attending the workshop.

The day will begin with 7:30 a.m. registration. The exam will begin at 3 p.m. With the class limited to the first 50 people, reregistration is required.

Landscape, Turf Clinic

The GCUA will have a hands-on landscape and turf clinic March 22 at the State University of West Georgia in Carrollton, Ga.

Planned for commercial landscape employees, the clinic will provide landscape and turf training and will provide six hours of pesticide recertification credit in category 24. Topics will include ornamental and tree insects, new turf herbicides, equipment maintenance, urban tree care and pesticide storage and disposal.

The one-day clinic will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. To learn more about it, call the Extension Service office in your county. Or call the Haralson County Extension Office at (770) 646-2026.

Short Course on Orchids

An "Orchid Production and Culture Short Course" is planned for March 23-24 at Fifield Hall on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, Fla.

Short course topics will include orchid classification, pollination, biology, ecology, diversity, production, marketing, tissue culture, diseases and insect pests.

The short course will begin with 8 a.m. registration on Saturday, March 23. It will end the next day at 4:30 p.m. The registration fee is $85. For more information, contact Bodie Pennisi at (229) 386-3410.

The field of medicine is ever-changing, and the use of herbal medicines may play a bigger role in health care as the value of natural remedies gain recognition in the Western world. Students at the University of Georgia’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences are delving into the field of medicinal remedies through the class “Herbs, Spices and Medicinal Plants.” Offered to undergraduate students through the Department of Horticulture, the class helps students develop a deeper understanding of the connection between nature and health.

During the pandemic, labor problems became acute on many farms in Georgia and across the country. Farms once staffed by humans to bring produce from the field to stores for purchase were suddenly short-staffed, and the global supply chain was severely impacted. Working with UGA’s Vidalia Onion and Vegetable Research Center and A&M Farms in Lyons, Georgia, a team of researchers led by School of Computing Professor Prashant Doshi is designing collaborative robots to mitigate some of these potential challenges.
2024 honorees are William D. Branch, Georgia Seed Development Professor in Peanut Breeding and Genetics in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, and Elzie Argene Claxton, an agriculture educator and 1980 CAES agricultural education graduate who went on to earn a master’s degree in 1982 and education specialist degree in 1984 from UGA’s College of Education. An innovator in peanut breeding whose research revitalized an industry and an ardent champion of agricultural education were inducted into the Georgia Agricultural Hall of Fame at the 68th University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Alumni Association Awards in Athens. The 2024 honorees are William D. Branch, Georgia Seed Development Professor in Peanut Breeding and Genetics in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences, and Elzie Argene Claxton, an agriculture educator and 1980 CAES agricultural education graduate.
Peach growers are looking forward to a fruitful season as the weather this winter and spring have been near-perfect for the sensitive crop. This year is projected to be a much-needed comeback from the disastrous season they experienced after a late freeze in March 2023 took out more than 90% of the state's crop. Last year, the peach industry lost $60 million due to the late freeze that hit much of the Southeast in mid-March 2023, said Jeff Cook, University of Georgia Cooperative Extension agent for Peach and Taylor counties. With no freezing temperatures in the forecast and hope for strong pricing during the upcoming season, peach growers are looking forward to a much-needed rebound year.
