Walter Reeves

On the next "Gardening in Georgia" Sept. 26 and 29, host Walter Reeves gets a lesson in dividing a pot of bamboo.

Bamboo expert Frank Linton shows how a bamboo clump spreads by rhizomes. He explains the key points in dividing an overgrown pot to get clumps for other containers.

Reeves has fun with techniques for growing kudzu. He tells how much 30-weight motor oil to use as fertilizer (to avoid friction) and how much brick rubble or cinder block to use as mulch.

Mealybugs, Hyacinth Beans

He also looks at mealybugs, common pests of indoor houseplants, and shows how to control them. Finally, he examines purple hyacinth bean (Dolichos lablab). With pink-purple flowers, deep purple bean pods and decorative black bean seed, it can be grown in full sun on arbors or mailboxes.

"Gardening in Georgia" airs each Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. It's rebroadcast every Saturday at noon. The show's Web site provides further information.

The show is produced especially for Georgia gardeners by the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and Georgia Public Television.

Dan Rahn is a news editor with the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
