Landscape, Garden Pointers on 'Gardening'

On this week's "Gardening in Georgia," host Walter Reeves has some pointers to enhance the beauty of your landscape and garden. And co-host Tara Dillard shows how to use rocks to create raised beds for plants.

The show will air on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast again at noon Saturday, Sept. 8, on Georgia Public Television.

This week, Reeves shows how to create an espalier. After drawing a heart shape on a brick wall with chalk, he inserts lead anchors into the masonry. Then he twists small screw eyes into the inserts and strings heavy duty wire through eyes.

He pulls sprouts from a gangly elaeagnus to the wire form and attaches it with light-gauge wire.

Let Me Show You My Edgings

Dillard visits Margaret Moseley's garden to show various plant bed edgings. Some of the prettiest islands are edged in stones and rough concrete. The beds are raised to the height of the stones.

The stones and concrete have aged and mossed beautifully, giving her garden lots of character. Other islands are edged in brick with the holes showing. The newest islands have no edging at all.

Finally, Sara Henderson shows Reeves how she makes attractive plant markers out of small pieces of slate (2 inches high, 3 inches wide), coat hanger wire, bamboo and Liquid Nails.

Wednesdays, Saturdays on GPTV

"Gardening in Georgia" airs each Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. It's rebroadcast every Saturday at noon. The show's Web site provides further information. The show is produced especially for Georgia gardeners by the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and GPTV.

A new study from the University of Georgia found that children from all walks of life improved their diet quality when they ate school-prepared lunches following the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act nutritional guidelines instead of home-prepared lunches.

University of Georgia Cooperative Extension depends on thousands of volunteers who give generously to extend program impact and reach in support Extension missions. During Volunteer Appreciation Week April 21-28, UGA Extension celebrates the many volunteers who donate their time to facilitate 4-H, Master Gardener and Family and Consumer Sciences programming. Volunteers across Extension contributed over 324,200 hours in 2023, the equivalent of more than 155 full-time employees.

During the pandemic, labor problems became acute on many farms in Georgia and across the country. Farms once staffed by humans to bring produce from the field to stores for purchase were suddenly short-staffed, and the global supply chain was severely impacted. Working with UGA’s Vidalia Onion and Vegetable Research Center and A&M Farms in Lyons, Georgia, a team of researchers led by School of Computing Professor Prashant Doshi is designing collaborative robots to mitigate some of these potential challenges.
