Walter Reeves

Spring is here, and "Gardening in Georgia" can't be far behind. Host Walter Reeves and the popular Georgia Public Television show will return to the air Wednesday, April 4.

In his first show of the season, Reeves will show how to build three different types of cold frames to protect plants as you bring them outside in spring. He makes the first with four bales of hay and an old window sash, the second with a storm window and 1-inch-by-6-inch boards and the third of PVC pipe and 4-mil plastic sheeting.

He also shows how to hide those less-than-gorgeous daffodil leaves after the blooms are gone and before the leaves have turned yellow. (It's important for next year's blooms to keep the leaves on the plant as long as you can.)

Finally, Reeves shows how to plant tomatoes properly by buying disease-resistant varieties, planting deeply after removing lower leaves, fertilizing lightly and watering in the plants.

Wednesdays, Saturdays on GPTV

Don't miss "Gardening in Georgia" Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 12:30 p.m. The show is designed especially for Georgia gardeners. It's produced by the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and GPTV.

Dan Rahn is a news editor with the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
