Registration open for 2023 Georgia Ag Forecast

The 2023 Georgia Ag Forecast will be held the morning of Jan. 27 at the UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center and online.

Registration is now open for the 2023 Georgia Ag Forecast, which will be held Jan. 27 at the University of Georgia Tifton Conference Center on the UGA Tifton campus. A live virtual option will also be available.

The annual seminar, offered by the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES) and UGA Extension, shares the latest research and information from UGA faculty to help agribusinesses and producers prepare for the new year. 

“CAES is committed to sharing the latest economic projections for U.S. and state agriculture to guide farmers and agribusinesses,” said Mark McCann, assistant dean for Extension and Agriculture and Natural Resources program leader. “We look forward to sharing the 2023 forecast with our in-person and virtual attendees at the end of January.” 

New for 2023, the Georgia Farmer of the Year will be recognized at the event after a welcome from UGA-Tifton Assistant Dean Michael Toews and remarks from CAES Dean and Director Nick Place.

CAES economists will provide an outlook of agricultural markets for the coming year after an address from keynote speaker William Chambers, deputy chairperson for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) World Agricultural Outlook Board. Chambers, an agricultural economist, formerly served as the chair of the World Agricultural Outlook Board for food grains. He also spent a decade as a commodity and policy analyst with USDA's Farm Service Agency, where he analyzed commodity markets, farm policies, new program proposals and budget outlays.

Breakout sessions covering forecasts for Georgia’s 2023 growing season focusing on livestock and poultry, horticulture, row crops and timber will wrap up the half-day program.

A light breakfast is included with the $25 in-person registration fee. Virtual registration is available for $10.

The agenda is available at agforecast.caes.uga.edu. The keynote and breakout session recordings for the 2022 Georgia Ag Forecast are also available online.

The Georgia Ag Forecast is a CAES Signature Event. These special events showcase outstanding faculty contributions, foster community and industry collaboration, and spotlight the college’s impact on a global scale.

UGA Extension protects family farms and sensitive species 04/04/24 Emily Cabrera
Stanley Culpepper has dedicated the length of his career to supporting farmers in their mission to feed and clothe the world. For the past 25 years, Culpepper has been a weed science specialist for University of Georgia Cooperative Extension and a College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences faculty member. Recently his job has become increasingly complex as mounting challenges around the availability of pesticides — primarily herbicides — have taken center stage in agricultural production.

Newest round of Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grants awarded 03/05/24 Olivia Randall
Ten university-wide projects devoted to advancing interdisciplinary research across multiple application areas have been awarded Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grants as part of the 2023 cohort. The Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grant Program was launched in 2017 and offered again in 2019 and 2021 through a partnership between the offices of Research and Public Service and Outreach. These 10 awards were chosen from 70 proposals and reflect a commitment of $1 million from UGA President Jere W. Morehead.

CAES and USDA break ground on new agriculture research facility at UGA-Tifton 03/04/24 Jordan Powers
The University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service have broken ground on a new state-of-the-art research facility housing the Southeast Watershed Research Laboratory and the Crop Genetics and Breeding Research Unit. the UGA Tifton campus, the research facility will include a new, 31,000-square-foot building housing university and ARS employees working on climate-smart agricultural research.

Ron Walcott, University of Georgia vice provost for graduate education and dean of the Graduate School, was first a doctoral student at the UGA Tifton campus. As a UGA administrator and professor in the Department of Plant Pathology, Walcott helps students and colleagues find their sense of place at the university and has a legacy of increasing diversity in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

When Phyllicia Thomas walked across the stage to accept her degree in environmental law in December 2023, it was the culmination of two journeys — one toward a dream set upon as a high school student and the other an unforeseen detour she navigated with determination and the steadfast support of her family. Thomas embarked on the second journey just over a year after graduating from the University of Georgia’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences with a bachelor’s degree in environmental economics and management in May 2019.
