Oct. 7 'Georgia Gardener' Cites 'Monkey Grass'

Why is it called "monkey grass"? Even "The Georgia Gardener" doesn't know for sure. But on his GPTV show Oct. 7 and 9, host Walter Reeves visits with Wally Pressey at Classic Groundcovers in Athens to learn some interesting facts.

Liriope spicata

Pressey shows several varieties of liriope and mondo grass and tells about their care and maintenance. He admits that he, too, doesn't really know why it's called "monkey grass." But he has a theory.

Reeves also shows three ways to fill low spots in your lawn that lead to scalped places where the mower wheels drop into the holes. And he visits with Helen Phillips at Callaway Gardens, where they look at foliage plants that are interesting year-round.

Don't miss "The Georgia Gardener" on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. or Saturdays at 10 a.m. on GPTV. The show is designed especially for Georgia gardeners.

"The Georgia Gardener" is produced by the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and PFC Holding Company.
