Hummingbirds, containers in 'Gardening' spotlight

By Katherine Tippins

Hummingbird diets and plant containers are among the topics that will be covered on the July 12 and 14 episodes of "Gardening in Georgia."

"Gardening in Georgia" airs each Thursday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 12:30 and 6:30 p.m. on Georgia Public Broadcasting stations.

Hummingbirds are lovely complements to any garden, and show host Walter Reeves has some tips for attracting them. He'll present several types of hummingbird feeders and share a homegrown nectar recipe for these flighty friends.

If you're looking for flexible beauty around your home, consider container planting for your garden or front stoop. You can use these versatile and easily changeable adornments year-round if you prepare them properly.

On this episode, Reeves also takes some advice from Melodie McDanal of Atlanta's Habersham Gardens. McDanal will use some odd plants to show how to produce a full-sun container.

Have you ever thought of your soil grade? Does it fail or pass? To know exactly how to care for your soil, you must first find out its level of fitness.

Your local University of Georgia Cooperative Extension office can determine your soil's grade. And Reeves, a retired UGA Extension county agent, will show how to gather a soil sample and send it off for testing.

GPB and the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences coproduce "Gardening in Georgia." The 2007 season is underwritten by McCorkle Nurseries, with support from the Metro Atlanta Landscape and Turf Association. Learn more about "Gardening in Georgia" at www.gardeningingeorgia.com.
