Twilight Organic Field Day July 7 near Lyons, Ga.

University of Georgia

The University of Georgia will have a "Twilight Organic Field Day" from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 7 at the Vidalia Onion and Vegetable Research Center near Lyons.

The event is free and will end with a supper featuring locally grown, organic produce. If you plan to come, call George Boyhan (912-681-5639) or farm superintendent Randy Hill (912-565-7822).

The center is between Lyons and Reidsville. It's just inside Toombs County on Georgia highways 178 and 147.

The field day will show research on growing cantaloupes, cucumbers and watermelons in no-till, biodegradable plastic and regular black-plastic systems.

It will look at passive and active composting, too. And it will highlight the new pumpkin UGA horticulturists hope to release for the 2006 season.
