UGA Ornamental Open House Oct. 1

Beautiful Day for Landscape Lovers

Whether you landscape professionally or just go for gorgeous in your own yard, you won't want to miss the Ornamental Horticulture Open House Oct. 1 at the University of Georgia Athens campus.

The UGA Department of Horticulture and the State Botanical Garden of Georgia have put together an exciting tour of research plots, variety trials and display gardens.

At the horticulture farm, you'll see the latest research on soil amendments, including Permatil, Mycor, mushroom compost and poultry litter. You'll also see an extensive collection of new woody plants that UGA horticulture professor Michael Dirr is evaluating.

Trial Gardens

The annual and perennial trial gardens on the UGA campus will be ablaze with color. You'll want to note which varieties perform best in the late-summer heat.

Another stop on the tour is the new International Garden, a showcase of world flora at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia.

Scientists on Hand

During lunch, scientists from the Tifton and Griffin campuses of the UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences will be on hand to discuss their research and extension programs.

Wear comfortable walking shoes and cool clothing. And be prepared for a fact-filled day with the faculty and staff (rain or shine).

The tours will start promptly at 9 a.m. from the upper parking lot of the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. The garden is at 2450 South Milledge Ave., about 1 mile outside the Athens bypass.

The $20 fee (or $25 after Sept. 24) covers lunch and bus transportation to the tour sites. To sign up, or to learn more about the event, contact the county extension office. Or call (706) 542-2861.
