UGA pesticide applicator recertification classes set

Certified pesticide applicators need recertification training to renew their licenses. University of Georgia Extension will offer pesticide applicator recertification classes in Valdosta and St. Simons this October.

The Valdosta class is set for Oct. 2 from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. at the Dougherty County Extension office. The St. Simons class will be held Oct. 22 at the St. Simons Island Casino from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The Valdosta class registration fee is $45 and increases to $55 after Sept. 24. The St. Simons class fee is $50 and increases to $60 after Oct. 14.

Certified applicators can earn five hours of Georgia Commercial Pesticide Credit for attending each class. This credit can be divided over categories 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 31, 32, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39 and 41. Private applicators can earn up to two credit hours.

Experts from UGA Extension, UFL Extension, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and Wiregrass Technical College will teach at these classes. The Glynn, Lowndes and Thomas coounty offices of UGA Extension are sponsoring the recertification training sessions.

If the October classes don’t fit into your schedule, another class is set for Dec. 3 in Statesboro. Organized by Bulloch County's UGA Extension office, this class costs $50 through Nov. 25 and then increases $60 for late registrants.

University of Georgia alumnus Allison Johnson joined UGA Cooperative Extension as the new Pesticide Safety Education Program (PSEP) coordinator on Aug. 1. The public service position is responsible for creating educational resources and training materials to help private and commercial pesticide applicators obtain proper certifications for the safe and effective use of pesticides throughout the state.

Entomosporium leaf spot on Photinia (Red Tip). Small reddish leaf spots appear initially. As spots age, center is grayish with a dark purple border. Leaf spots may coalesce causing severe leaf blight. Severely infected leaves drop prematurely. Over time severely infected plants die. Excessive rain signals another a bad year for leaf spot diseases on landscape trees and shrubs. The leaf spotting that affects pear trees, including both edible pears and ornamental Bradford types, is caused by a fungal disease known as Entomosporium leaf spot. This disease also affects related shrubs such as Indian hawthorn and red tip photinia.
Paper wasps gather fibers from dead wood and plant stems, which they mix with saliva and use to construct nests resembling gray or brown papery material. CAES News
