UGA students 'tough enough' to tackle 37th annual rodeo

By Stephanie Schupska

Whether you’re tough enough to wear pink, have children who love baby animals or want to holler for calf ropers and bull riders, the University of Georgia’s Block and Bridle Club is gearing up for you. The 37th annual Great Southland Stampede Rodeo rolls into Athens, Ga., April 14-16.

It’s the only student-run Professional Rodeo Cowboys’ Association rodeo in the nation. Hard work by students from UGA’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences make it happen.

Events start April 14 with “Tough Enough to Be a Dawg” student night. Student tickets Thursday night will be $10 with a valid UGA identification card. Children and adult tickets are also discounted that night, at $12 and $15.

April 15 is “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” night. For every person who comes to the arena wearing pink, $1 will be donated to the Breast Cancer Foundation. April 16 is “Tough Enough to Serve” night when military and other public service personnel will be recognized.

The rodeo will be held at the UGA Livestock Instructional Arena, located at 2600 South Milledge Avenue. It includes rodeo competitions like bull riding, calf roping and barrel racing. UGA alum and professional rodeo announcer Roger Mooney will provide commentary.

Gates open at 6 p.m. The rodeo starts at 8 p.m. At the gate, Friday and Saturday night tickets are $16 for adults and $13 for students and children (preordered, they’re $13 for adults, $11 for students and children). Children three and under are free each night.

Tickets can be preordered by calling (706) 542-9374 from April 4 through April 14. Thursday night, preordered tickets are $10 for kids and students and $12 for adults.

Seating is limited. Doors will be closed to general admission once attendance has reached maximum capacity.
