Landscape cost estimating workshop set in Griffin

Landscape businesses are popping up all over Georgia, and each faces a common challenge. Big, little, seasoned veteran or new in the business, each has to decide how much to bid on a job.

Without the proper tools, that's a tough decision. Bid too low and you lose money. Bid too high and you don't get the job.

Fortunately, the University of Georgia takes the guesswork out of the decision with its "Cost Estimating and Job Bidding Workshops for Landscape Professionals" Nov. 30-Dec. 1 in Griffin, Ga.

UGA horticulturists Gary Wade and Elizabeth Winans and economist Cesar Escalante will provide computer software and show how to use it to estimate overhead, labor and equipment costs. The program will be in a computer lab and is limited to 26 people, so don't wait to sign up.

When, where

The workshop will start at 10 a.m. Nov. 30 in Room 327 of the Flynt Building on the UGA Griffin campus. Get directions or a map online at www.caes.uga.edu/campus/griffin/profile/directions_maps.html.

The first day's sessions will show how to use Hort Scape software to figure landscape installation costs. Friday's program, which starts at 8 a.m., will show how to use Hort Management software for maintenance cost estimating.

The $150 fee, or $250 for two people from the same firm, covers the cost of both software packages, lunch both days, refreshment breaks and instruction.

A new study from the University of Georgia found that children from all walks of life improved their diet quality when they ate school-prepared lunches following the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act nutritional guidelines instead of home-prepared lunches.

The University of Georgia Griffin campus recently named Kenny Corley and Daniel Nordstrom the 2024 Classified Employees of the Year. The designation was made at the 35th annual Employee Recognition Ceremony held April 3. The Employee of the Year award is presented to classified personnel who have made a significant impact on programs at UGA-Griffin through superior job knowledge and performance, work attitude, initiative, dependability and time management.

University of Georgia Cooperative Extension depends on thousands of volunteers who give generously to extend program impact and reach in support Extension missions. During Volunteer Appreciation Week April 21-28, UGA Extension celebrates the many volunteers who donate their time to facilitate 4-H, Master Gardener and Family and Consumer Sciences programming. Volunteers across Extension contributed over 324,200 hours in 2023, the equivalent of more than 155 full-time employees.

During the pandemic, labor problems became acute on many farms in Georgia and across the country. Farms once staffed by humans to bring produce from the field to stores for purchase were suddenly short-staffed, and the global supply chain was severely impacted. Working with UGA’s Vidalia Onion and Vegetable Research Center and A&M Farms in Lyons, Georgia, a team of researchers led by School of Computing Professor Prashant Doshi is designing collaborative robots to mitigate some of these potential challenges.
